I was having coffee with my neighbor about 5 years ago and he said he wasn't feeling well, that he felt a little loopy and I noticed a slight slur to his speech. So I called his wife and she came home and we took him to the emergency room. The doctor told her he had suffered a mini-stroke.He spent less than a week in the hospital and was put on a few low dose medications. He has been without incident since the initial problem. He is a man in his late 50's now and at the time was in average physical condition.I wish I could provide more detailed medical info.Lets hope she is back tending her garden in a few weeks.

Having suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) - seriously, folks - a few years back and been through at least one of these little bastards, I guess I can chime it. Trouble is when folks see or hear the word stroke, the worst comes to mind. Not having seen your wife or know her exact symptoms at the time of the "event", I can't really do more than offer generalized info. For mini-strokes, as many folks here have already covered, GENERALLY (in other words, don't hold me to it) the effects are temporary and pass without medical intervention or permanent damage. You need to be really concerned if the symptoms persist or even intensify. If it was simply a singular event and she has sought medical attention, I'm thinking she should be fine. Now as to what caused it, could be many things and I'm sure she'll be put through the gamut of tests (if she hasn't already) to try and nail down the exact cause of the event. My best wishes go out to your family, these can certainly be very frightening things, but I'm sure she'll get all the best treatment out there and be fine.

I guess it's very rude and improper to state that this explains so very much....

Mando I'm afraid the only help I can give is moral support. Along those lines, I'm sending positive thoughts, strength and healing vibes, and prayers to you both.

As already stated full recoveries are not uncommon. My Dad was a commercial airline pilot for 25 years. In the early 70s he suffered a mini-stroke. He of course thought the worst and was sure he would never fly again. The FAA physicals are extremely thorough. After a week or so in the hospital he was released. In order to get his pilot's license active again he had to go before the FAA Doctor's for a complete physical. He passed! He flew for five more years until it was time to retire. Thoughts and positive energy go out to you and the Mrs.

I had something akin to that two years ago at age 39. It turned out to be CVT - Cerebral Venous Thrombosis. Slurred speech, couldn't answer simple questions, messed up vision and balance. I was on blood thinners for a while but just aspirin now and feeling great. If you have any questions let me know.

I'm no doctor, but from what I understand with family members that have experienced the same, is that a mini-stroke/TIA does not generally result in any permanent problems/side effects (as noted by other posters) BUT can be seen as sign of some looming problems IF not addressed. Thus, to put in best possible light without sugar coating, think of it as a helpful wake up call that may necessitate some life style changes in order to prevent future problems.

Prayers go out to your Mrs., brother!

Strangely, in the past day or so the topic of the appropriate rapid initial care for TIAs & stroke has been on my mind for no apparent reason.

I found this this morn: http://www.medpagetoday.com/Cardiology/Strokes/45143

As far as nutraceuticals:
I don't recall all the details but 'seems like' oral dosing of ALCAR (Acetyl-L-carnitine) & NAC (N-acetylcysteine) within the 1st few hours can help minimize damage (I think that there is firm science on this). These won't hurt you & they are available at health food stores- there may not necessarily preventative measures though

Also Sulbutiamine, Noopept &/or the some of the racetam family might help in next few weeks/months. There is research in this as well- most of Noopept's is in Russian....

Again, prayers go out- whether you pray or not- meditate! There is good science on the importance of meditation. It will keep your gourd as it should be.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Update.....

Well, we don't know what it was, but the Doc is pretty sure he knows what it isn't. Absent any other symptoms other than an initial 'heaviness' in the chest followed by severe dizziness and shortness of breath, he's 99% sure it wasn't a TIA or a heart attack. EKGs and blood enzymes were all normal. He said she made a good choice to take two aspirin right away and she's to continue with that until she gets back to Virginia.

That said, if it happens again, she's supposed to go immediately to the ER. No reason to cut her trip short. Once she gets back she's got a follow up with her doc here at home for follow-up.

I greatly appreciate all the prayers, good thoughts, good vibes, positive energy here and in off-forum emails. I even heard from a Carpathian monkey whisperer.....

You guys and gals are all outstanding people....

Frankly when faced with this sort of thing, I am unable so say much, other than God have mercy . We are lucky that in a lot of those kind of situations, medicine has come a long way, but some of this is up to "the Universe" .
I am going though a rough year with aging parents . My mother is going through chemo, and it has been a emotional roller coster . Always wondering if I am doing the right thing, fighting to get them to do the right thing . My mother is 88, and my father is 92 .
Not to be funny, but I sort of fast forward trough "Death Don't Have no Mercy", just too close to reality these days . But, seriously music is a help . The Dead , and Beethoven .
I'm glad the crisis seems to be under control . Hang in there .

So glad everything looks OK for now. This is a serious wakeup for all of us. Sounds like she did all the right things and has good medical care, thank goodness. I am so making sure we have aspirin around. Given that we're short on Carpathian monkey whisperers. Sending good energy your way from the other side of the globe here ...

Excellent news. Sounds like the great unwashed here, myself included, weren't hasty in our positive diagnosis.

I may not be a doctor but I do play one on the internet.

Aspirin is freakin' amazing stuff, especially considering that it's foundation has been in use as far back as the second millennium BC by the Egyptians (yes, Monte, hemp has much the same history)
